The Walpole, New Cross Road

The Walpole, New Cross Road, New Cross, London

The Walpole is a student housing development comprising 87 rooms organised in clusters, together with independent studios, to accommodate the increasing student population around Goldsmiths, one of the University of London’s prestigious centres of learning. Whilst addressing the Georgian heritage of its context the Walpole forms a new landmark building on New Cross Road, at the convergence of the A2 and the A20. The ground level is animated by a new bar and restaurant to replace the former pub, yet providing a calm courtyard focussed arrangement away from the traffic for the surrounding student accommodation. The building form steps down to the North from a high point on the busy road providing a cascading evergreen wall of planting.
The building has been efficiently planned to maximise the potential of the site providing high quality communal spaces and private rooms for a new generation of students and makes a positive contribution to the environment and its adjoining neighbours.
